How to Help Aging Parents Adjust

It is hard to watch our parents get older. As we age, it is natural to feel a little more vulnerable, and when we see our parents starting to show those signs of vulnerability, it can be scary.

But there are things you can do to help your aging parents adjust. They need to know that you are there for them and that you understand what they are going through. Here are some tips for helping your aging parent adjust:

  • Determine Expectations

Create a list of all the rigorous tasks for your parents to perform, or have them make their list. It will help you determine which tasks need to be completed by family members and which tasks can be outsourced to professionals such as a Home Care Provider.

  • Identify Time Commitment

If certain tasks require more time than others, consider having more than one family member assist with the tasks. It may also be helpful for family members who live far away from each other to rotate living arrangements so that each person has equal time with their aging parent(s).

  • Hire Helpers

If hiring helpers is financially feasible, consider hiring someone who can perform Activities of Daily Living, such as bathing your parents or driving them to places they need to go (e.g., doctor appointments).

You might also consider using Home Care Services to help your parent.
